DTF Printing in Detail: How a Brilliant Print Is Made

DTF Printing in Detail: How a Brilliant Print Is Made

Direct-to-film is our premium printing technique. We walk you through how a DTF print is made, step by step, and which designs it suits best.

Printed DTF transfer films with colorful designs next to a heat press

If you're into garment printing, there are three letters you can't avoid: DTF. Direct-to-film has become the most versatile printing technique of recent years and is our first choice at BrandCanyon for detailed, color-intensive designs. Time to take a close look at what actually happens.

What direct-to-film means

With DTF printing, your design isn't printed directly onto the garment but first mirror-inverted onto a special PET film. That sounds like a detour, but it's the decisive advantage: on film, colors come out more opaque and details finer than on fabric. Only then does the design move onto your garment.

From design to finished print: the four steps

First, a specialized printer prints your design onto the film using CMYK inks plus an additional white layer. That white later sits between fabric and color and makes your design pop even on dark garments. The still-wet print is then dusted with a fine adhesive powder, which is melted under heat. In the heat press, the design is transferred onto the garment with heat and pressure. After cooling, the film is peeled off and only the print remains.

Which designs DTF is right for

Almost all of them. Photorealistic artwork, fine lines, small lettering, color gradients: DTF reproduces all of it precisely, without you worrying about color counts or pretreatment. Add the material freedom: DTF adheres to cotton, polyester, blends, and even nylon. You can have the same design printed on a t-shirt, sports shorts, and a tote bag.

Durability and care

DTF prints are stretchable, abrasion-resistant, and washable up to 60 degrees. In practice that means: normal washing inside out, and the design survives many wash cycles without cracking or fading. For streetwear and everyday clothing, the technique is more than robust enough.

DTF or DTG: which fits you?

DTG, printing directly onto the fabric, remains strong when you want an especially soft feel on pure cotton. But as soon as material variety, opaque colors on dark fabrics, or fine details matter, DTF plays its strengths. When in doubt, order a sample in both techniques and compare for yourself.

From a single piece, without risk

The best part comes last: at BrandCanyon there's no minimum quantity for DTF. You can order a single shirt, check the quality, and only then scale up. Set up your designs in the Hub and give it a try.
